About Comm(s)unity & The Purpose of This Substack
The community was formed in March 2020 as things were starting to get weird. They’re still plenty weird, and Comm(s)unity is a place for forward thinking comms professionals to gather and share knowledge, tips and encouragement to others. The community has now grown into the high-hundreds of folks and the conversation and content is just as solid as the early days. Members pull together Zoom calls around topics and there are frequent IRL meet-ups among members in cities around the United States (mostly).
Since the community was founded many have used it to find jobs, clients and new hires. People have been saying since the beginning: “Hey, this place is really valuable! You should charge for it!”
So, we (who are also the creators of the senior level comms and brand marketing community, Mixing Board) started looking at ways to charge for participation in the community. After all, we’ve seen with Mixing Board and other communities that making involvement more official encouraged greater engagement. We also wanted to be able to justify and fund time spent on running and evolving the community. We knew we would do more on this front and could make the group even more valuable if a tangible value was placed on it.
Yet, after literally a year of trying to find an elegant payments solution that wouldn’t disrupt the community and inexorably shift the vibes in a not good way, we decided to make financially supporting the community voluntary. And, we chose Substack to help with this.

Our mission with Mixing Board and Comm(s)unity is to raise the value of the work that we do and those who do it. We believe that we’ve made big strides in this goal since 2020 from little moments along the way — be they helping people advocate for a bigger title, supporting leaders in their conversations with CEOs , unearthing great jobs for highly-talented people, broadening people’s skill sets and so on.
